Earlier this month, I had the great opportunity to visit the George Aquarium and I have to share what an amazing place this was for me. What an awesome experience it was! I had always heard the Georgia Aquarium was “fantastic” and a great place to visit, however, I can tell you that it is nothing short of stunning. As you first enter the main building, I was struck by the enormity of the central arena…and the amount of people visiting this very unique aquarium.
A grand two story building gives you a great view in each direction to all of the incredible exhibits. Somehow we walked immediately into the Ocean Voyager exhibit and my husband and I were star struck at the exhilarating 6.3 million gallon tank holding 3 huge whale sharks amongst so many other species in this ocean exhibit. The animals were unbelivable and it was incredibly hard to walk away from one little window as you first walk into the exhibit to actually go inside and see all sides of this giant tank. I was awestruck, again, over this part of the aquarium…at how many species lived together in this tank…things I had never seen before.
The day went on in amazement from there, however, those three whale sharks and the huge manta rays, all in one tank were mesmorizing…and we talked about them all day. Later we visited the Cold Water Quest arctic exhibit, where we were struck again by two beautiful…and amazingly white…Beluga whales. Playful and so incredibly social, the white whales were dancing around the tank alongside these adorable little seals, we couldn’t help but stand there enjoying such wonderful and unique creatures. At one point, everyone was swimming together upside down…so cute and so captivating.
There was so much to see…the smaller exhibits of exciting animals like these tiny sea dragons and the frog exhibit (I went there for my sister who is freaked out by frogs), and we didn’t even get to go into every exhibit, but I would say this was one of my top ranking days. I love animals and I love the ocean…so if you are in the Atlanta area, the George Aquarium is a great place to take the entire family and spend a wonderful day. You won’t be disappointed.
One hint, be sure to bring a decent camera…I didn’t get great shots of the animals (see my photo’s included in the post) but I had sure had a blast that day and will never forget my experience there. I really can’t wait to go back again.
